Green your car tips

What are the most efficient ways to green the car?
Apart of very obvious way to buy a green car (a hybrid or alternative-fuel vehicle), there are some tips for you to green your existing car.

Driving best practice
Avoid sudden starts and stops and go the speed limit. Smooth, steady driving saves huge amounts of gasoline and curbs harmful emissions. Flooring it for just one second can produce nearly the same volume of CO2 as 30 minutes of normal travel. Relax behind the wheel. Aggressive driving and high speed can increase your fuel consumption by as much as 35 percent (35%). The idling habit is bad for your pocket, your car, and the environment. A car idling for nine minutes emits double the pollutants of a car that is turned off and then restarted. Try to avoid rush-hour traffic, and turn off the engine if you’re at a standstill for 30 seconds or more. Automatic car starters result in unnecessary idling and waste a lot of the fuel you later have to pay for. Even on the coldest winter days (and as long as your windows are defrosted) today’s electronically controlled engines allow you to drive only 30 seconds after starting the engine. Or you can use a block heater to warm up the engine before you start. Obviously, you will save some money by greening your car.

Stay in tune
Regular car maintenance will help you to save both money and fuel. Keep your car tuned, follow the maintenance manual, change the oil and air filter, checking for leaks once a month, taking your vehicle for regular tune-ups and read the owner’s manual. Keep your tires inflated to improve gas mileage by 3 percent.

Go easy on the air conditioner
Use the windows to help keep the car cool, or try an electric or solar fan. It always takes less to cool the car off when you park it the shade and use a reflective windshield shade.

Use carpool
If you can’t do a big step to change your habits, start with one shared trip a week. Find coworkers, neighbors, and friends headed the same direction and check car sharing programs.

Use public transport and leave your car at home
At least for shorter adventures or local shopping use public transit or ride your bike.
